DR. AARON I. VINIK WINS SEALE HARRIS AWARD

Aaron I. Vinik, research director of the Strelitz Diabetes Institutes of Eastern Virginia Medical School, has been awarded the Southern Medical Association's Seale Harris Award.  The award recognizes outstanding research accomplishments in the field of metabolism, endocrinology or nutrition.Vinik, a professor of internal medicine at EVMS, was honored in part for his co-discovery of the gene INGAP, which has reversed diabetes in animals. Human trials are now underway. Vinik also is a leading international expert in the causes and treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
