![]() of Eastern Virginia Medical School Clinical ResearchThrough the integration of basic science and clinical research, Strelitz Diabetes Institutes’ investigators have developed an expansive neuropathy research program that explores the causes of nerve death and seek ways to reverse nerve damage and regenerate nerves. Their investigations allow them to design preventative measures and develop possible new treatments for this most common complication of diabetes. The Institutes’ neuropathy scientific team consists of SDI protein chemists and cell and molecular biologists, SDI and community physicians, clinicians, plastic surgeons, podiatrists and neurologists. Neuroendocrine Tumor Program Neuroendocrine tumors are relatively rare, occurring in about 1/3000 of the American population on an annual basis. These tumors derive from adult stem cells that are capable of producing a large variety of hormones, and therefore, a variety of clinical conditions such as flushing, diarrhea, diabetes, heart disease, skin rashes, peptic ulcer disease and hypoglycemia. The clinical presentations are due to slow growing tumors in the gut and pancreas most commonly, but they can occur in many other sites in the body. These include: carcinoids, insulinoma, gastrinoma, glucagonoma, to mention a few. A complete discussion of the nature of these tumors, their humors, clinical presentation and management can be found on the linked Internet site www.endotext.org, which is free to the public and health care providers alike. The Strelitz Diabetes Institutes is one of the few centers offering special care for these patients and unique expertise to provide detailed evaluation. The neuroendocrine tumor unit is a worldwide referral center for these patients and is the coordinating center for participation in many new therapeutic trials, providing sophisticated diagnostics and partnership with superb laboratory support.
