Running for Diabetes:

Laird Roach's NYC Marathon Challenge

Laird Roach was very excited to run her first marathon this year - the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6th. She was one of the lucky numbers to be drawn out of 85,000 applicants, and ran the 26.2 mile course through all five boroughs in 4 hours and 44 minutes. You go girl! Among the 2 million spectators was her family. They were there to cheer her on as she ran for the fight against diabetes at the Strelitz Diabetes Institutes and to honor her sister, Keeling, who developed diabetes three years ago at the age of 17.

Laird says, "Even from the early stages of her diagnosis, Keeling has managed this disease with a positive attitude. Her strength and courage continue to inspire me. She wears an insulin pump, which helps by giving her flexibility in managing her treatment. Of course, it is hard, as an older sister, wanting to protect Keeling and having to think about the complications she may face down the road."

Thank you to the Roach family - Laird, Keeling and parents Mary and Frank. And to all those who gave their support totaling to date over $3,500 for the Diabetes Institutes Foundation.
